Best Management Practices
Our District Integrated Vector Management Plan combines practicable systems and strategies with an emphasis on biological, operational, technologic, economic, and environmentally sound means.
The Operations Department utilizes BMPs as a collaborative function that promotes stakeholder participation and strengthens relations with the public sector to promote the well-being of the public’s health through mitigation of stagnant water sources, reducing pollution from nonpoint and point sources, and maintaining the integrity of inherent source sites related to mosquito development in the Coachella Valley.
Our Goal
The goal with BMP is to share our information with the community stakeholders and engage in strategies and solutions that would mitigate problematic source sites in identified areas.
Areas of Concern
The following conditions or factors that inhibit proper drainage of water in source sites. All locations were catch basins.
- Sump areas: Base part of catch basins hold water for long periods of time. Promoting breeding sources.
- Pollution: Leaf litter and debris add forms of coverage and nutrients to the water source. Enhancing quality for mosquito larvae.
- Challenges: Dense leaf litter makes applications challenging.
- Possible solutions: Maintenance program for city sites is strongly recommended or increasing frequency of cleaning program to sustain integrity of catch basins and drainage systems.
